Rodney Kilborn - "Da Handsome Bugga"
Aloha Nui Loa!
The first race, the Handsome Bugga Poi Bowl, took place on Sunday, July 3rd. The 3-star course (9 to 14 miles) was a 9.54 mile downwind paddle from Maliko Gulch to Kahului Harbor, Maui. A show of nearly 60 competitors with light to moderate winds left the participants feeling excited and geared up to give it their all. Connor Baxter, the rising star of Stand-up Paddle was the first place elite finisher with a time 1:10:03. His win earned him 1000 points toward the Triple Crown. Livio Menelau, a staple paddler here in Hawaii took second with a time of 1:11:22. His finish earned him 860 points. Third place went to Mark Raaphorst with a time of 1:13:53 and 730 points. In the women’s division Andrea Moller-Bouwens took first with a time of 1:21:03 earning her 1000 points. Exactly one minute late Talia Gangini crossed the finish line bagging 860 points. Third went to Devin Blish finishing at 1:25:49 with 730 points. All top finishers went home that day with a killer glass trophy and not to mention a chunk of cash. The first leg wrapped up with a celebration at the Hawaiian Canoe Club hale including music, good food, and of course: an awards ceremony.

A Word From Conner Baxter...
The Triple Crown consists of Three Events on Maui. The First Event is from Maliko Gulch to Kahului Harbor (9.54 miles). The Second Event goes from Maliko Gulch to Honolua Bay (21-miles). The Third and final Event of the series, paddlers traverse the Pai'lolo channel from Honolua Bay to Kaunakakai Harbor, Moloka'i (27-miles).
These events are on three consecutive weekends – July 3rd, July 10th and July 16th. On Sunday morning July 3rd – we all had to be at Maliko Gulch by 10:00am. The turnout for the event was great. There were 60 competitors, and they were some of the best on the island. We had our skippers meeting at about 11:00am and the start was before Noon.
The race started inside of Maliko Bay between two buoys. I started towards the left side of the bay. When I got outside of the bay, I was in second place behind Jerry Bess. Within 5 minutes of being in the bumps, I passed him up and I was in the lead. I just put my head down and focused on one thing and that was wining. I looked back to see my competition a few times, but I stayed focused and kept catching bumps. The trade winds were light to moderate, but still was super fun and I got some good long glides.
When I came around the outside of Kahului Harbor I was still in first. I had a good lead on second and third place – Livio Menelau and Mark Raaphorst. So, all I had to do was keep my pace coming into the harbor to the finish line at the beach. At the finish there were a lot of people hooting and hollering for my first place finish!
It was super fun race and a bunch of great competitors. There was good food, awards ceremony and I went home with a beautiful glass trophy and some prize money.
Once I got home – I showered up and was on my way to the airport for the DaHui Independence Day Race – Monday July 4th on Oahu’s North Shore.
I want to thank my sponsors for all their help and support – Starboard, Rainbow Sandals, Maui Jim Sunglasses, EFX Technology, Dakine, Nike, GoPro Cameras, On It Pro, Waterman’s Sunscreen, Sunrite Maui, SIC and Hi-Tech Sports.
Also a big Mahalo to all the event organizers and volunteers.

Conner Baxter shares his experience in Race #2...
This event was from Maliko Gulch to Honolua Bay (21+ miles) on Sunday – July 10th. This was a great race, however, it had some of the hardest conditions. The race started at 10:45 in the morning inside of Maliko Harbor. Only 32 competitors showed up for this race – but they were some of the best from here (Maui), a few from Oahu and some from Australia. Most racers know how grueling this run is, so many opt not to compete in it.
At the start, we all had to be in-between two buoys and sitting down on our boards. When the horn, blew I decided to do a sprint to get in clean water and also to play some mind games on the other competitors. So, I was in front of everyone for the first half-an-hour and then Aaron Abbey turned the switch on and caught up to me; never leaving my side until Three Sisters. That’s about 2 1/2 hours of us having a paddle battle between first and second place. Three Sisters is an outcrop of three huge rocks sticking out of the ocean.
The conditions weren’t great, but they could of have been worse so that was the positive side. Paddling out of Maliko, the wind was about 90 degrees to the board, so you had to paddle on the left side constantly – and there were very few bumps to take. The main objective is to head out to sea to be able to clear the northwest point of Maui called Nakalele Point.
This is the hard part of the race. Because you want to take the glide – but you can’t. You have to head out to sea at least 10 miles to be able to clear Nakalele Point.
After about 1 1/2 hours, I could start bearing off and run with the waves more, but I still had to make sure to head out every chance I had.
There were not many bumps to catch – especially in the beginning – just an occasional one here and there, which I would catch, allowing me to take a little rest. My dad was on our jet ski beside me passing me energy bars and drinks to keep me going. He also had a squirt gun to spray me when and if I got hot. I think that was his highlight of the trip.
As I got closer to Kahakuloa, I notice I was paddling a lot harder and not moving as fast, so I put two and two together and realized that there was a lot of current going in the opposite direction. It was like that for the last 5 to 6 miles.
So I moved in closer to the rugged coastline to try and get out of the strong current coming down the channel – and this seemed to help.
As I said before, Aaron was right next to me until Three Sisters and he had a board that was a bit faster in the flatter water – so I knew that I had to make a gap on him before Honolua Bay – and the finish line. So I took my last hammer gel and turned the power on. And it is kind of funny, as I got closer to the finish I felt like all the pain went away because all I was thinking about was winnning, so nothing was going to get in my way.
But, thank goodness the run got a little better towards the end and I was actually catching some nice bumps – even though I really had to work for them. When I rounded Honolua point, I was a good distance in front of Aaron. As I got close to the finish there were a bunch of tourist swimming by the finish line and on the cliffs they were all cheering for me.
First place earned me 10,000 points – coupled with the first place from the First event – giving me a total of 11,000 points. Aaron Abbey is now in second place with 9,610, then Livio Menelau with 9,110 and my Starboard Teammate Bart de Zwart with 8,333.
After getting everything packed up we went to the Maui Tropical Plantation for the awards. They had unreal food and live entertainment. I got a fantastic Glass Trophy, Maui Jim Sunglasses and Prize Money.

Mormaii Sponsors SUP 27 milescrossing in Hawaii
For the second consecutive year took place, in Hawai, the crossing between the islands of Maui and Molokai sponsored by the Brazilian Navy. The challenge was valid for the third stage of the SUP Jim Triple Crown 2011.
Connor Baxter in the men’s category and Andrea Moller in the women’s category, had 100% success and won the three races valid for the triple crown of rowing in stand up paddle boards, that took place in the last 3 weekends in Hawaii.
For the second consecutive year, the third stage -the hardest of them all- was sponsored by Mormaii. 17-year-old Connor was the two-time-champion of the tournament, leaving Dave Kalama in second place. He managed to cross the Pai 'lolo in 3 hours and 10 minutes. Andrea Moller-Bouwens also repeated the conquest, becoming two-time-champion of Mormaii World Cup Maui to Mokalai.
The route of Mormaii World Cup, which was held on July 16, was from Honolua Bay (Maui) to the dock in Kaunakakai Harbor (Mokolai). Participants paddled 27 miles (48, 6 km) in the stream, facing winds of 25 knots and waves of 2 to 5 feet.
The first part of the Triple Crown of SUP was held on July 3, and the tour was from Maliko Gulch to Kahului Harbor Hawaiian Canoe Club, with a distance of 9.5 miles. And the second test on July 10, starting at Maliko Gulch to Honolua Bay, a distance of 21 miles.
According to the organizer of the Triple Crown, these competitions are challenges that require a lot of physical, technical and psychological preparation. It separates the true athletes, from those SUP paddlers who enter to the sea only on Sundays.
Being considered as a recreation or a competition, the SUP is a sensational booming sport in the world of surfing; the waves as well as the crossings.
Stay upright on the board using paddles to move takes back to one of the most primitive forms of surfing in Hawaii, the birthplace of this community. This is why the Hawaiian media carried out an extensive coverage of the 3 stages.
